In contemporary America, it is becoming more and more apparent that technology can be both a blessing and a curse.  The internet, for example, provides us all with opportunities and information that would have been unthinkable just a decade or so ago.  It can also represent, however, a dire threat to individual privacy and security.  With rampant problems such as identity theft, viruses, and spyware, the internet is definitely a double edged sword.

On the contrary, however, it is also a magnificent technological marvel.  I wouldn’t be writing this article right now, nor would you be reading it, if it weren’t for the internet.  Since it is such a valuable resource, then, what are we to do in order to make sure that we’re protected online?

One of the primary things to do is to ensure that any company you deal with online is properly defended and has a great policy regarding their internet security.  Such is the case with Bank of America, one of the worldwide leaders in banking, lending, and finance.  Bank of America is a gigantic conglomerate which is absolutely committed to doing its utmost to protect its own interests, and those of its clients.

Nothing highlights this fact more brightly than Bank of America’s Privacy and Security policy.  The policy states that Bank of America will endeavor to always do its best at, “protecting your information,” “ensuring your accounts are secure,” and “providing safety tips.”

Bank of America protects your information by, first of all, not sharing it with anyone unless it is absolutely vital that they do so.  This is immensely important because the more companies that have your data on their servers, the more risk you assume of someone gaining access to that information.  Bank of America states that the only companies they share your information with will be their “partner companies,” and that such companies will have to sign strict privacy contracts regarding your personal information.  This is huge, since many other companies will openly sell your information to the highest bidder.

Likewise, Bank of America really allows you to try to take your personal internet security into your own hands.  Along with all of their own safeguards and policies, they also offer a great deal of tips and are very willing to answer any questions you may have.  I contacted them to see how long it would take for them to respond to a few simple questions, and got an almost immediate response.  Needless to say, this is a wonderful feature to look for in your online banking provider.

Bank of America has another unique feature that really allows its customers to take control, namely the fact that they allow you to set your own privacy settings.  This allows you to closely specify just how and when Bank of America can share your information, and with whom.  You can also get help creating a truly dynamic, safe password, and finding out about downloading anti-virus and anti-spyware software packages.  Indeed, there tips are just as good, often stating things like, “Don’t have your social security number printed on your checks.”  Sure, that’s just common-sense advice, but many people will find it helpful.

In the final estimation, Bank of America does a great deal to encourage the safety and privacy of their internet customers.  That is not to say, though, that they couldn’t be doing more.  And, despite all of their current options and features, it seems that there baseline policy on sharing customer information is a bit too lenient and represents a risk.  All in all, however, they are one of the industry leaders when it comes to internet security.  If the choice was between Bank of America and Wachovia, or any other number of online banking institutions, most consumers would probably be served best by choosing Bank of America.
